A CELEBRATION OF
THE HUMAN FIGURE
PRESEN TED BY:
Germany-born Jasmin Pickens was trying to build some buzz in her
Arizona market for her brand’s boudoir photography services when she came
up with the vision for this particular fashion editorial shoot. It was just what she
needed to push her own creative limits and simultaneously fill up the social
media channels for her company, Sugar & Lace Studio.
It all started with an idea, Pickens says. She had the location: Arizona’s
beautiful backdrop filled with nothing but cows, wilderness, tall grass, cacti
and mountains . She had the model: Stefanie Tedards, whom she met through
Arizona Model Management specifically for this shoot. And she had a wardrobe:
a vintage piece that was remade from a 1970’s dress by an unknown designer.
“I wanted to see in a photograph what I have in my soul,” Pickens recalls.
But that, of course, wasn’t without its challenges—one of which was a critical
component to the shoot: the outfit. “I didn’t know the model personally, or if she
would be okay wearing this sheer dress, or even if it would fit.” That uncertainty
was quickly resolved once the model put the dress on—perfect fit.
Says Pickens, “I love how this shoot turned out, how the model rocked it and
how everything just fell into place perfectly.” Inspired by film and the details
in the dress, Pickens shot with a Nikon D800 with a Sigma 35mm Art lens
and edited the images to match the emotions she had envisioned from the
start. For some frames, she says, “I felt the black and white brought out more
details in the outfit,” and for others she opted for a vintage flair by fading the
blues and yellows.
When asked if she has advice for aspiring boudoir shooters, Pickens advises
to never stop trying, and not to be afraid to reach out. “Don’t be afraid to scout
for models. Don’t be scared to contact model agencies. In life, you just have to
take chances and go for it.”
