EXHIBIT
A Mapplethorpe
Retrospective
Two L.A. museums are honoring a photographer who
many consider to be one of the most influential and
significant artists of the 20th century. On view now, the
works that encompass “Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect
Medium” are divided between The J. Paul Getty Museum
and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a thorough
retrospective that Getty Museum director Timothy Potts
promises “will provide the most comprehensive and
intimate survey of Mapplethorpe’s work ever seen.” With
Mapplethorpe’s portraits, self-portraits, floral still lifes
and figure studies on view—both well known and rarely
seen—the museums are laying bare the artist’s prolific
photographic legacy, created up until his death in 1989.
A sophisticated lighter, with obsessive attention to detail
in posing, Mapplethorpe’s work is an essential study of
classic inspiration. Both retrospectives will be on view
through July 31, 2016. —LP
