Improved Master Classes
When our team sat down to put together
the WPPI conference, I took a hard look at
your feedback to see where we needed improvement. I’ve always loved the master
classes because they were small, intimate
and used for intensive learning. Over the
years, they’ve also become a starting point
for newer instructors who were developing their programs and learning to speak
in front of a crowd. That being said, there
are many places to develop the art of public speaking but WPPI isn’t one of them.
Starting with 2014, we will have fewer new
speakers, and the master classes will be
taught by master photographers.
I‘ve hand-selected this group of pho-
tographers who have asked to be more
involved because they love giving back
to the industry. They will also have plat-
form presentations, but have graciously
designed master classes to make YOU
part of the conversation.
For instance, Cliff Mautner will offer
a format that asks you for problems in
your business, and then helps you work
through them. Imagine being able to
openly discuss and ask advice from people
who really understand the concerns in
your business! This heavy weight line-up
will also includes Paul Ernest, Parker Pfis-
ter, and Jose Villa.
Mary and Justin Marantz, Katelyn James,
Matt Kennedy, Jen Rozenbaum, Chuck
Arlund and Elizabeth Messina will all have
larger classes with more engagement and
discussion. From speakers who’ve been
helping our industry for decades to the
ones who will be making their debut, it all
happens here first, and it’s this experience
of engagement that can only be found
once a year in Las Vegas.
There’s been a ton of cross over the last
few years (photo-film, film-photo), and as
someone who was bit by the filmmaking
bug a few years ago, I really wanted to add
this element to our conference.
I also saw an opportunity to invite a group
that really needed a new home. So, for the
first time ever, we will be offering filmmaking for filmmakers. This means a full
track of classes by some of the best in the
industry! These classes will also be available to photographers interested in learning real world filmmaking techniques, and
vice versa. What a great way to bring two
groups together that have a long history
16x20 Print Comp Re-Boot
What else do WPPI members get? I’m
excited to be rolling out an exciting new
accolades program, and beyond stoked to
announce the one and only Jerry Ghionis
will be the man in charge of our print competition. During the last several months,
there has been a team updating, clarifying
and adding changes to the competition. As
in every year, you guys set the bar for the
world’s best wedding and portrait photography and with one of the world’s best at
the helm, this year will be better than ever!
I’ve always been a little confused as to
what a full conference pass gets you, so to
make things crystal clear, I’m calling it a
6-day pass. What does it include?
•Starting Saturday, March 1st, you’ll
have access to sit in on the 16x20
print competition. If you’ve never wit-
nessed, and/or been part of this, it’s a
must! Print competition runs through
• Access to all the events! Last year, the
week kicked off with an evening with
Jerry Ghionis. It was one of my favorite parts of the conference, and we’re
bringing it back!
•Access to select longer programs!
We’re going to have several three-
hour programs with solid information
you can’t get anywhere else, taught by
some of the best in the industry.
• FULL day of programs for Sunday—
….And that’s just a peek of what’s to
come. So who’s ready for Vegas?! RF
IT’S MORE THAN
IT’S A LIGHT
Photography is all about light –
about controlling and shaping light.
Therefore, a photographer’s tools
should be designed to do just that.
This is where Profoto’s RFi softboxes
enter the picture.
RFi softboxes come in all sizes and
shapes, and are compatible with all
major flash brands. To ensure full
control for the photographer, they
have a deeper shape, a recessed front,
double-layered diffusers and a highly
reflective silver interior. Optional
accessories are available for even
more precise light shaping.
In short, an RFi softbox is more than
just a softbox…
