Every year around this time, features editor Libby
Peterson and I make 30 super talented wedding
photographers extremely happy. In turn, we have
to (sadly) break the hearts of about 200 hopeful
nominees who spent precious time they didn’t really
have culling a carefully curated body of work to submit to our annual
30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography competition. It really does
pain us to have to deliver the bad news, but as I always say year after
year, it really is an honor just to be nominated because it means you
are already on the radar of the “big wigs” in the industry—photo editors,
tech leaders, bloggers and other super successful photographers—who
are aware of your super awesome talent! That said, let’s now turn our
attention to this year’s honorees, whose work you can view starting on
page 46. We are thrilled to have such innovative image-makers on the
roster from 15 countries across the globe. And as Libby writes in the
section opener to this year’s 30 Rising Stars print gallery, “while years
past have been marked by dark styles and film-like palettes, we’re
seeing a return to true documentarians—each
with a signature aesthetic twist.” Enjoy!

When uK photographer Marianne chua saw a
trampoline in the back garden where her clients’
wedding was to take place, she asked the bride
whether she’d be fine with jumping in her dress.
Fortunately, both she and the groom were totally
on board. “Emma is a hockey player,” chua notes,
“and I’ve always found my sporty brides are good
at rising to a challenge! She even got her family
to move the trampoline to an ideal spot where the
treeline in the background was lowest. I knew I
wanted it to be as clean as possible. I told them to
get lots of air and counted them in.”
