Heidi Lender is a free-spirited nomad who has lived many lives,
including as a fashion editor in Paris and a yoga disciple in India.
When she decided to embark on a personal weekly photo assignment
a couple of years ago for a self-portrait series called “Once Upon,” the
concept seemed fairly straightforward: “Stand on a bench. Make sure
it’s Monday. Wear something pretty.”
The 43 photos that have come to comprise the series feature Lender
headless (with her trusty pooch Bubba close by), in various indoor and
outdoor locales, exploring herself through clothes from her own closet.
“With a platform on which to stand, I investigate the host of personalities
within,” she explains, “the layers that make up the self, the characters we
hide, show, accept and reject, and the role that fashion and design play in
molding those characters. My closet is colorful, a menagerie of clothes and
accessories amassed on my journeys; though a collection untouched, unworn.
Here, it has place and purpose. Headless self-portraits, piled with textures,
lend a sense of objectivity, obscurity and freedom from identification.”
